RFU to investigate West Country derby

The Rugby Football Union will launch an investigation into yesterday's extraordinary match between Gloucester and Bath, which ended with a mass punch-up and a fan reportedly throwing a bottle at referee Tim Wigglesworth.

In an ill-tempered West Country derby at Kingsholm, trouble that had been brewing all game finally boiled over after Bath were awarded a last-minute penalty try that, with George Ford's conversion, meant they won 18-17.

Gloucester scrum-half Tavis Knoyle, on as a replacement, threw several punches at Bath's Leroy Houston, sparking a brawl between the two sides. Knoyle was subsequently sent off, making him the second Gloucester player to be shown a red card in the afternoon, prop Sila Puafisi having already been banished to the sidelines after a high tackle on Nick Abendanon.
