The strange move was heralded last summer, when he was distanced from direct team affairs at Bath with the promotion to head coach of Mike Ford, England’s defence coach at the 2011 World Cup and father of Bath’s fly-half George.
That was described as a “restructure”, as is this latest turn of events.
“The decision was taken following a restructure of the rugby department and with the best interests of both Gary and the club in mind,” said a Bath statement, that can be interpreted as meaning there was no room at the Rec for both Gold, 47, and Ford.
Steve McNamara, coach of the England rugby league side, is set to join them as attack coach.
