An announcement over a significant land-swap deal is due to be made later, enabling the expansion of Bath Rugby Club.
The BBC understands the Recreation Ground Trust has given a "thumbs up in principle" for the proposal.
The swap involves Bath Rugby Club giving up its former training ground in Lambridge in exchange for a bigger part of the recreation ground.
If the deal is made, permission will be needed from the Charity Commission.
Planning application
The Charity Commission will then begin a 28-day public consultation before making its final decision.
If the commission agrees the plans are in the best interests of the trust, then a planning application will be submitted to Bath and North East Somerset Council.
The area currently occupied by the rugby club takes up just over a quarter of the total space at the Rec.
Previous plans by the club to redevelop the ground were turned down by the Charity Commission in 2009.
A meeting is due to be held by the Recreation Ground Trust at 18.30 BST.
