The sad news that David Barnes has had to retire with immediate effect was yet another reminder of the fragility of the livelihood of the modern professional rugby player. In Barnesy's case a neck injury with potentially serious and long-term consequences if he continued playing has lost him the tail-end of this season and what would have been his swansong in 2011-12.But he has been talented and lucky enough to enjoy a lengthy career as a top-level rugby player and has had to retire during his testimonial season – a fitting tribute at least to his longevity and durability at rugby's acknowledged coalface.
